I don't get why a country like Mexico does so poorly compared to Argentina/Brazil, countries of similar size. (Well actually Mexico is 3 times more population but meh)

Not really sure, most clubs have money to spend I imagine because most clubs did spend money, a lot of new players joined the league(I'll be making a list later) .

To be honest most things that have to do with money in Mexican football is pretty hush hush, lots of players come and go and no one ever knows how much they actually were bought and sold for, you just get an idea about how much they are worth. The football promoters have as much as a hold on the transfer business as they ever had though, I think they've even made it into the national team now, a lot of the staff are Carlos Hurtado men.

Carlos Hurtado might be most powerful and most influential man in Mexican football, and he's a fucking agent. The corruption continues. Neutral

I always thought Mexican players stuck around because they were well paid?

I think outside of the big leagues in Europe Mexico is probably one of the best paying places in the world, would explain why a lot of South Americans choose to play in Mexico when they are not quite ready for Europe yet but are still really good footballer, guys like Chupete, Benitez, Aaron Galindo and Torrado come to mine when I think of players that weren't doing too bad in Europe but for whatever reasons(probably financial )returned to Mexico.
